How to involve your wali at the right stage online, without making the conversation cold or transactional.
The wali is not optional in Sunni nikah. The wali is also not someone who needs to be on the first call.
When to involve the wali
Bring him in once you and the brother have spoken enough to know you'd like the conversation to continue with seriousness. Earlier than that, and you're inviting noise. Later than that, and you're skirting an obligation.
What he should know up front
- · Where you met (Auntie introduced us).
- · What you've discussed and what you haven't.
- · What stage of consideration you're in.
- · What questions he should ask the brother that you can't.
When the wali says no
Listen first. He often sees things you don't. Sometimes his concern is cultural rather than Islamic, that's worth a conversation. Sometimes he's right.
